چکیده

This paper describes the current status of ongoing research looking into students’ “gaming the system” behaviors in an open-ended learning environment—the game Newton’s Playground—in relation to their physics learning, enjoyment of the game, and persistence. Our next step is to code students’ gaming behaviors and then compare learning via pretest and posttest scores. We’ll also examine gaming behaviors relative to enjoyment of the game and persistence. Findings can inform improvements to Newton’s Playground (and other games) and guide the design of scaffolding for students in other OELEs.

Assessment and Learning of Qualitative Physics in Newton's Playground

This study investigated the learning and assessment efficacy of a physics video game we developed called Newton's Playground. 165 8th and 9th graders played Newton's Playground for roughly five hours. Findings include significant pre-post physics gains and notable correlations between performance in Newton's Playground and physics pretest knowledge. Suggestions are given on how to develop asses...

Parental Mediation of Children’s Video Game Experiences: Iranian Parents’ Strategies of Mediation

Despite tremendous popularity of video games, there have been concerns about their detrimental effects on children. The game rating systems were developed to assist parents in monitoring their children’s gaming experiences. This paper explores how parents in Iran, as a society without established media rating systems, control their children’s gaming experiences. Mixed methods of semi-structured...

An Exploratory Analysis of Confusion Among Students Using Newton’s Playground

We investigated the interplay between confusion and in-game behavior among students using Newton’s Playground (NP), a computer game for physics. We gathered data from 48 public high school students in the Philippines. Upon analyzing quantitative field observations and interaction logs generated by NP, we found that confusion among students was negatively correlated with earning a gold badge (so...
